4.2 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Thirteen years after the party at Starke house, Jesse Miller is now in New York, interviewing for a job.

Only this isn’t just any job interview. This interview is with Cole Pearson. The man everyone wants to work for. The man, who, in five short years, has taken the business world by storm and amassed not only billions, but the attention of everyone, who wants to be someone. Fumbling his way through a disastrous interview, Jesse believes the day can’t get any worse. That is, until Cole Pearson turns to Jesse, and he sees not Cole Pearson, but Edward Starke. Aware Starke has possessed Cole Pearson, Jesse gathers a menagerie of men to take him down.

Can a ghost, a reporter, an ex-priest, and a childhood friend come together to end Starke once and for all, or will the possession of Cole Pearson only be the beginning?

How do you fight someone who has already died?

The world building in this universe was well done. I especially liked the way the author tied the most frightening scenes in the previous instalments into what happened this time around. They were only more chilling now that I had even more information about what Edward Starke was truly capable of. This definitely isn’t something that should be read late at night. The places these characters live and the creatures they meet are far too creepy for that.

There were pacing issues. So much time was spent in the first several scenes setting up the conflict and explaining what had happened to these characters in previous instalments that the ending felt rushed to me. There simply wasn’t enough time in the last couple of scenes to cover everything that had been foreshadowed earlier on.

Jesse has changed a lot since I first met him in Beyond The Red Door. He was always a likeable guy, but I found myself feeling drawn even closer to him now that he was an adult and had a stronger sense of just how dangerous it is to mess around with demons. His cautious approach to such things made me respect him, and his determination to make things right is going to keep my attention focused on this universe until I know how everything ends.

This is the fourth story in this series. It can be read on its own or out of order.

Possession: The Rise of Edward Starke should be read by anyone who is in the mood to get scared.

From the moment Jesse Miller entered the Starke house, he knew his life would never the same. Witnessing events that have made him question the world around him, he's done his best to move forward. Thirteen years after the event that claimed several lives, he's now found himself in New York. He looks forward to what life has to bring, never once imagining that danger still lurks around the corner. If he's to survive and endure the chaos that now surrounds him, he'll have to accept a truth he never thought possible. A truth that may or may not break him.

Another lovely addition to the Demon series, Possession catapults us further in the story surrounding the history of the Starke house. Most of us are aware of the supernatural world. A good many see, hear, and even speak to ghosts. E. H. has captured that element of the paranormal in such a way that it makes the reader want to delve further into the world she's created. She's given us characters who are broken, yet determined in moving forward in order to make sense of the adversities they encounter on a daily basis.

With every book within this series, we learn more about Edward Starke's drive. We see his intentions laid out for us in the hopes of our understanding why he's done what he's done. This is a character who cares nothing about the world around him. He seeks destruction and does everything to achieve his every goal. The silver lining, however, is that there are those who will do everything possible to make sure he doesn't succeed. For if he is does, chaos will always reign supreme.

Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!

James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.

THE DEMON SERIES of which POSSESSION: THE RISE OF EDWARD STARKE is the fourth volume demonstrates James’ mastery of the short story. In a brief 85 pages she mounts the suspense for the entire series even more. The entire Demon Series will cover centuries; the fourth volume opens in New York in 2025.

James’ synopsis covers the story well ‘Thirteen years after the party at Starke house, Jesse Miller is now in New York, interviewing for a job. Only this isn’t just any job interview. This interview is with Cole Pearson. The man everyone wants to work for. The man, who, in five short years, has taken the business world by storm and amassed not only billions, but also the attention of everyone, who wants to be someone. Can a ghost, a reporter, an ex-priest, and a childhood friend come together to end Starke once and for all, or will the possession of Cole Pearson only be the beginning?’

Knowing that the series continues makes the mystery of part 4 a very exciting continuation and growth. E.H. James is a master writer. Grady Harp, December 17

This author has done it again and brought forth another creepy but amazing short story of Edward Stark in this phenomenal read.

The characters were remarkable and completely real feeling. I love how this author weaves a new story each time but with the same characters in different time frames. I love reconnecting with characters and being reminded about what happened in previous books.

The story-line, though short, was still addicting and to the point. I was completely enchanted by this story. I just couldn't put this book down. This is by far my favorite story of them all yet with the newest twists, turns, and secrets and I highly recommend this to adults.

The author provided me with a digital ARC copy of the book for review purposes only. No remuneration was exchanged.
