5.0 out of 5 stars Emma Clark Lam brings the privileged ex pat community of 1970s Jakarta to life with great skill
In The Puppet Master, Emma Clark Lam brings the privileged ex pat community of 1970s Jakarta to life with great skill. It's an exotic world filled with clubs, pool parties and servants but the drama is more prosaic in nature. A controlling and increasingly jealous husband, a wife torn between a sense of duty and a desire for a more fulfilling life. There is sense of claustrophobia that builds throughout, and the tension ratchets up for a gripping finale. The abuse of power by men in the workplace has been in the news a lot this year, The Puppet Master is a reminder that most abuse happens behind closed doors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked!
I must admit it took me a while to get into the story - but once I did, I was hooked. Indeed, I read the second half in a couple of days because I was racing to get to the end to discover what was going to happen. I was really pulled into Jakarta in the 1970s and thought the historical context really added to the story. It is very well written and I recommend it highly. I'm going to go back and read her earlier book now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Marital Crisis in Jakarta
This is the story of a dysfunctional marriage of an couple in Jakarta in the 1970's. I found the description of the life of an ex-pat wife fascinating. I wasn't quite convinced that she really had to leave her husband - I felt there must have been many men like that at that time. But it was real page-turner, and the race to the airport at the end had me utterly gripped. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
The Puppet Master is a great read: a tightly plotted story, full of emotional suspense. The characters are believable and the reader is drawn into the predicament and choices of the sympathetic first person narrator. There is just the tiniest hint that this may not be a totally reliable voice! The setting is beautifully drawn and cleverly enmeshed with the narrative. Highly recommended.

This is a tale of life in ex-pat Jakarta in the 70's and the style of writing built a sense of place and quickly drew me in. I believed in the characters and their individual stories and was disappointed to have finished the book so quickly - it was a real page turner and I'd of happily read more about each of them.
