The truth doesn't have versions. Or does it?

Rin Lee covered her childhood in dirt and danced on its grave. Only she pranced a little too hard and spent her young-adult life tiptoeing the straight and narrow. Things finally paid off in the form of a job with the Department of Defense, a home of her own, and a boyfriend muscled enough he put Zach Efron to shame. Until one text reveals a hideous truth that splinters her world.

Suddenly she can’t trust Nate or their surrogate family of friends. Can she possibly trust Luck—the man who mirrors her soul, scares her beyond the neat confines she’s erected around herself, and makes her scrutinize the versions she’s always been too angry to see?

Luck turned to the streets out of necessity, while Rin slapped on blinders and ignored those willing to help her. A stupid move for a sultry young woman. But the skills she learned in the rough and tumble underbelly of DC will serve his latest assignment well. Because people like them have the instinct to survive.

Loved It

Rin and Nate have been together for about a year and everything is going along great. The sex is great, even if it is just sex. But Rin met someone for what seems like a split second, and she can’t get him out of her mind, but she doesn’t know where to find him again. It’s been a long time. Rin also finds out that Nate isn’t who she thinks he is. What a great story. Once I started it, I couldn’t stop. It just drew me in for the fast-paced ride and I didn’t want it to end. Boy, am I glad there’s another book after this. I want more.

A bit too short as I love my Mitcham at full dosage

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I attest that every word, opinion and comment is solely mine.

Ok the necessary is done and now to the nitty gritty...

First I would like to warn all faint of heart that the first chapter begins with a huge KAPOW!!! Boy-o-boy I had to double check that it was Chapter 1.
I must confess that this one, #7 of the Base Branch series, is totally different in its flow but no fear it has a fair bit of action, spice and nerve racking moments.

I think the first clue to its difference is that it didn't follow along with the *(word)* - MINE, as well being a novella it seems a bit rushed and the characters do not have the same slow unfolding of their multiple dimensions. There are moments the action and flow is true to Ms Mitcham then it jumps and we rush ahead again. I would have loved to spend a bit more time with Rin's story and her Granddad. Paw-Paw who brought her up and also who he was... a respected legend as their home was in the rough side of town but he refused to allow anyone to push him around. Cara's character and why she is who she is and her relationship with young Rin as well as her Dad who clearly knew more about the whys.

I love Ms Mitcham's writing style and the way she works her characters, scenarios and all the twists and turns but this one... I don't know but it felt as if I was on a fast train and somewhat in the dark to why some things happened and who are these people and where did they come from as there was no back story or explanation. It wasn't until later in the story some history on Rin and Luck was filled in but only a few questions were answered. Also what happened to Nate?
Only one character was hinted at in an earlier book (Cara Lee in Danger Mine, as Khani was flushing her out) but Rin, Nate, Popov and even Luck were totally new and you missed the getting to know them phase as in the earlier books where characters were rally well rounded.

So this one had some misses for me... my very fav parts I love most, the slow burn and relationship build mixed with the suspense and drama of some of the mind boggling situations and don't forget characters who are so multi dimensional they keep you guessing and emotionally wrung by the end of the book. I think that's the biggest upset for me, the emotional ride was not as expected.
I gave it four stars because of the dip in the expected level of layers but it still had moments of action, suspense and spice.

I believe in Ms Mitcham as she has created soooo many excellent journeys and, though this is a bit different approach, I will be more open-minded and see where this new path is taking us.
