Nudging Fate: M/M Fantasy Rom-Com (Enchanted Occasions Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 392 ratings

With his heart’s desire at stake, can he resist giving Fate a little nudge?

Half-norn event planner Anders Skuldsson is under strict orders from Asgard not to meddle with Fate. But with Enchanted Occasions’ latest booking—the competition for the hand of Faerie’s one true prince—crashing around his ears, it’s really, really, really difficult to toe that particular line. So… if Andy just happens to pose as a contender for the prince? It’s an emergency, damn it. Besides, it’s only temporary, so Odin can hardly blame him. Right?

If Conall of Odstone hadn’t sworn a blood oath to protect his half-brother, Prince Reyner, he’d murder the idiot himself. Rey was supposed to be here, choosing a mate before being crowned and wed. Instead, he’s disappeared, leaving Con to impersonate him. Again.

But when Con meets Andy, his anger turns to desire… and despair. Even if Andy forgives him for pretending to be someone he’s not, how could a man as appealing and accomplished as Andy—a man who’s eligible for a prince’s hand, for pity’s sake—settle for the court outcast?

As for Andy, his burgeoning feelings for the prince are both unfortunate and hopeless because hello? Half-norn? Faerie prince? Not exactly a match made in Valhalla.

When the Faerie Queen herself hands down an ultimatum, the double deception isn’t their only obstacle. Unless Andy makes the right decision, both their fates could be sealed by… well… Fate.

Nudging Fate is a 54,000-word paranormal rom-com featuring mistaken identity, royalty in disguise, interfering coworkers, an iron knight with a soft heart, a temperamental goblin chef, and a guaranteed HEA.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I have to say that Russell's world building is my new jam... Then we get the whole utterly beautiful chaos at the end that had my hand on my chest and my eyes glued to the page because OMFG!! So freaking good." --Boy Meets Boy Reviews

"I just love this author when she's being playful! Those who loved Cutie and the Beast will also love this book. ...the plot, while superficially a romp of increasingly ridiculous circumstances, was really a story of integrity and kindness overcoming manipulation and selfishness. It's a romantic comedy with a moral, in the style of a fairy tale, but so much more fun."
--Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

"If you like your romances with a healthy dose of humor, lots of twists and turns, and more than one surprise, if an adventurous quest for love between the realms is your thing, if you like complicated characters with mysterious backstories, and if you're looking for an entertaining read set in a carefully developed fantasy world, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. I'm still smiling and can't wait for the next installment in this series!"
--Rainbow Reviews

"EJ Russell is quickly becoming one of my favorite fantasy authors and Nudging Fate is just a perfect example of why. Fun, witty, low-angst and interesting, Ms. Russell kept my attention throughout the story. I was thoroughly entertained by Anders and Con's antics and was enchanted with their unlikely love story."
--Bayou Book Junkie

"You know how some books only focus on the main characters and then there are the supporting characters that sometimes enhance a story. Well with this book I loved the supporting characters just as much as I loved the main characters and I don't think the book would have been as entertaining without them. I do have to say that I wasn't expecting what happened at the end of the book, but I loved how the book was resolved."
--OptimuMM

"The overall tone for this story was tense and steady and oh so cute. I loved the feelings I felt as this story moved forward. I was so caught up in it all. And in the end I was so happy things turned out as they did. I was left feeling satisfied and happy... I highly recommend you pick this one up and give it a chance."

About the Author

E.J. Russell—certified geek, mother of three, recovering actor—spends her days wrangling data and her evenings and weekends wrestling words. Her daily commute consists of walking from one side of her office to the other, from left-brain day job to right-brain writer’s cave, where she’s learned to type with a dog attached to her hip and a cat draped across her wrists. E.J. is married to Curmudgeonly Husband, a man who cares even less about sports than she does. Luckily, C.H. loves to cook, or all three of their children (Lovely Daughter and Darling Sons A and B) would have survived on nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, and satsuma mandarins (the extent of E.J.’s culinary skill set). E.J. lives in rural Oregon, enjoys visits from her wonderful adult children, and indulges in good books, red wine, and the occasional hyperbole. E.J. Russell is an autobuy for me and this book delightfully fulfilled my expectations--funny, sexy, charming main characters; secondary characters who are much more than just wallpaper; a real problem with real consequences keeping the main characters apart; and a completely unexpected (to me, anyway) ending that literally left me with my mouth hanging open in shock for a few moments. Russell is skilled at bringing characters to life on the page and making you care about them (or despise them). I did start the book by googling "Norn" and getting a 90-second lesson in Norse mythology, but you could definitely save yourself ninety seconds and just plunge into the book--what little explaining is needed is handled subtly and in context. Nudging Fate is another winner from Russell and I'm impatiently awaiting the sequel(s).

The characters are interesting and sweet-their predicament, and the twists and turns to solve it clever. A little more heat would have been nice.

Russell builds a multilevel alt-world that is fantastic. Based on the Enchanted Occasions service and planning organization, composed of aitches (my, those humans have been prolific in their jaunts in the realms) who manage a courtship contest. A broad range of characters and a slough of mishaps humorously unravel as the MCs dance around their attraction.

An interesting plot & well developed fantasy aspects. The world building & characters were nicely done. The overall romance, though, didn't have anything really special to boost this higher than an okay rating.

I enjoyed this but it reminded me too much of Purrfect Harmony by Arden Steele for me to love it.

I have a hard and fast rule that now has one exception. I don't buy gay romance books written by women. Maybe I just read too many by the wrong women or maybe women can't manage stories that sing to me personally. I dunno. What I do know is EJ Russell is the one exception. I have no clue why I read my first Russell book but I'm glad I did. Anyone with the same misgivings I once had should buy this and experience her great world building, grasp of character, and fun dialog!

Wonderful story filled with an assortment of fun characters, crazy shenanigans, and romance. Andy is sweet and incredibly hardworking due to being half-norn. Con has been invisible his whole life but finally found the one person that makes him feel alive. The plot was engaging with a few clever twists thrown in. Loved this story!

This was such a fun and sweet read - it really fit the Rom-Com genre well. I also loved that the worldbuilding revolves around mythology - it made for some very interesting characters.

I loved Andy and Con. They were such sweet characters and their chemistry from the start was palpable - I admit I was a little disappointed that everything was fade to black, so we never see how scorching hot things were between them, but I also get that this is a rom-com so not that type of book. They were well matched and it was fun watching them try to figure out how to be together.

Can't wait to read more in this series, and would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun, light hearted romantic comedy with a mythological flair.
