We've all experienced that surreal situation when you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Sometimes you do both!

Living away from the place you once called 'home' can be exciting, stressful and disorientating--often all at once. Culture shock and homesickness can hit hard exacerbating feelings of displacement and leaving you feeling angry and resentful towards your new location. At times like this, laughter is often the best medicine.

Australian Cath Brew has travelled abroad for most of her life and though now settled in the UK, she has learned to cope with her own challenging emotions by drawing. In this delightful book she shares 100 cartoons of her life and the lives of others, which have helped her to see the funny side of a weird and wonderful life on the move.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Perfect for anyone who knows the challenges of expat living." Alison Cavatore, Founder of Global Living Magazine.

"It's our ability to see the humour in those embarrassing, unknown and sometimes painful situations that makes our days a little bit lighter and helps to deal with whatever comes next." Kristine Racina, Director of the Expatriate Archive Centre.

"The evocative, thought-provoking drawings beautifully capture the realities of expatriate life."Rachel Yates, The Expat LifeLine

About the Author

Cath is an Australian artist and heritage interpreter who specialises in cemeteries and sacred landscapes. She was brought up with a love of global travel from a young age. These travelling experiences opened her eyes to the diversity of culture and people and laid down the foundations of her career in the heritage field. Cath's work as the Cemeteries Conservation Officer for the National Trust of Australia (NSW) in Sydney, provided an opportunity to see the full gamut of human mortality and she gained further insight into the importance of culture, family and the sense of home. Cath has drawn for as long as she can remember and is rarely without her drawing book and pencil. Her work has featured on corporate Christmas cards, clothing, a book and promotional materials for various businesses, but she loves nothing more than sitting in a coffee shop sketching her immediate surroundings. Whether it's a cup and saucer or a family chatting at a nearby table, a holiday is not complete without café sketching! Whilst her drawing materials are the first thing she packs in a holiday bag, it's the experience of living outside of her home country that has birthed this book - a process of exploring complex thoughts and feelings about identity, community and personal well-being. Cath is married and lives in Dorset with her wife and their elderly deaf dog, Ozzie.

I have been an expat for most of my life. "Crossing the Road in Asia". I lived in Manila as a youth. Returned years later after being used to American pedestrian rules. I was so intimidated to cross a very busy thoroughfare that I took a taxi for safety! "Holidays Home". I had to visit the bank at each visit to maintain my account active. "Ill + Dying Family.. to Go or not." Do I go sooner (may not be necessary after all), or go later (could be too late). Good job Cath, I can see that this book comes from the heart.

This is a great little book! A fast and insightful review of living abroad. Though I never moved abroad permanently, I studied abroad for three years and this book brought back some of the, “Oh, yeah!” memories of that time of mixed emotions: exhilaration, confusion, joy, and home sickness. I love the all-inclusivity of the many different people, countries, and languages featured in these snapshot vignettes. Delightful read! Well worth the investment!!

As a Third Culture Kid (TCK) and a proud disabled educator/advocate Living Elsewhere was exactly the resource I was looking for. It clearly depicted and validated my experiences, memories and my life's journey. With the turning of each page I felt an immediate connection with Cath's illustrations and words. A definite must-have in a school library.

For anyone who identifies as an expat, global nomad, international, a Triangle, missionary, TCK or (the list goes on) OR for anyone who loves someone living overseas, this book is a must have. This book has been a long time coming as Cath visually takes us on an amazing and unique journey through the moments of those who treasure their passport more than anything, and feel most comfortable inside an airport. Looking at these moments through a new vantage point - in pen and ink - allows us to bring our world to light in a whole new way. These drawings strike me as humorous and laughable, and at the same time extremely poignant and heartbreaking. It's hard to define "home" but these drawings help bring our choices to life in a new way, one that only drawings could represent.

The book Living Elsewhere seemed so innocent on the surface. “Cute,” I thought, “a book of illustrations about living abroad.” But when I sunk into its pages I had no idea I was about to go on an emotional journey - from laughing to tearing up. I wasn’t prepared for the ways it tapped into the ups and downs of expat life. The grief, the identity issues, the yearning for belonging. All that and it made me snort laugh. A must-have for every globally mobile family.
