About the author
Greta Burroughs loves to read. No matter where she is, there is always a book close at hand. Her love of reading began at an early age and blossomed over time to include many different genres, her favorite now being fantasy.
As a preschool and elementary school teacher, Greta tried to instill the joy of reading in the children she worked with. Books were an important part of her classroom and story time was the highlight of the day.
It has been a while since Greta was in a classroom but she had lots of experience in reading to children of various ages and remembers what they enjoyed listening to. She tries to incorporate that knowledge into her work as an author and believes it makes her a better writer of children's and young adult books.
She now resides in SC with her husband, Robert and three dogs. Greta has six books published at the present time; three children’s books in the Patchwork Dog and Calico Cat series, two MG/YA fantasy entitled "Gerald and the Wee People" and "House on Bo-Kay Lane", and a nonfiction account of her experiences with an autoimmune blood disorder called ITP - "Heartaches and Miracles".

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2011I want to thank, Mrs. Greta Burroughs, for such a wonderful thought provoking children's book. I read Patchwork Dog and Calico Cat to my 3 year old...I enjoyed it immensely. We, my son and I, are animal lovers and avid book junkies. We finished the book on Wednesday night and had our usual conversation regarding what we read and what parts he liked...this way I can gauge how much he understood and how much he can translate into Spanish.
Last night we went for our usual relaxing pastime of walking, talking and exploring; when we stepped out of the house my son looked at me and said "Chloe se llama...mami el book ju read, book de gato y dog. Como llama dog"? (English: Chloe's name is...Mom in the book you read, the book of the cat and dog. What was the dog's name?) I replied "Patchwork"? He then proceeded to call our dog Patchy. Every cat that crossed our path was Calico and every dog Patchy. We went on talking about the stories in the book and he started laughing...curious I asked "why are you laughing"? He said "Patchy, no fly. birt (bird) fly" and then the little wheels spun like crazy because he looked up and said "Patchy fly en un plane. Calico, no plane. Mami, mucho, mucho manzana duele stomach". (English: Patchy fly in a plane. Calico, no plane. Mom a lot, a lot of apples hurt your stomach.)
I guess he did understand the book after all...and he remembered the stories, even though we took 5 nights to finish the book, he retained the lessons the stories relayed. For a child that can read by themselves, this is a recommended read. The questions at the end of the chapters help reinforce the lessons in each story. For children Brandon's age, I highly recommend moms and dads to read to them and talk about the message every story has. It is wonderful to hear your child, out of the blue, refer to a book you are reading or have read.
Greta, please write a sequel, you have a future stalker in your midst.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2012One of the greatest joys in my life is sitting down to read with my two sons. We were super excited to be offered the chance to read Patchwork Dog and Calico Cat by Greta Burroughs. As avid readers of adventures of all kinds, we sat down on the couch huddled around the book reader to begin the story.
First, I must tell you that Alex and Max are not patient readers, I mean listeners, so it takes a lot to keep them glued to a story. It must have action, it must have adventure, and some smart animals works well for them too. This story had it all.
Alex particularly identified with Patchwork Dog, who he decided maybe was a little too curious and nosy for his own good. As we read each chapter which are designed as stories unto themselves, Alex made constant comments about how he would love to do what Patchwork Dog was doing and why wasn't the Calico Cat hurrying up? As we reached the end of each chapter, he learned to anticipate that there would be questions for us to consider and talk about.
It was a lovely reading session. The stories of Patchwork Dog and Calico Cat getting into difficulties and troubles and figuring out how to do things differently next time kept Alex glued to his seat.
I highly recommend this book to children from ages 5 and up. The stories are captivating and do a great job of taking the learning that small children are going through and translating it to animals that children can easily identify with. The incidents in the story are very familiar but told from a dog or cat's point of view and the questions at the end of the chapter lead to thought-provoking (for little kids) discussions.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2011I previously read Greta's book `Gerald and the Wee People' and really enjoyed it, so when she asked me to proof her latest book, which was for children, I didn't have to be asked twice. This book is written for early readers aged between 5 and 8. I don't have children myself, so I can't comment on how a child would react to them. I can say that I really like the book. The language is easy and flows well. The paragraphs are small and the storyline is easy to follow. It is deceptively simple though in that there are some ideas for children to think about. It's also funny and sweet, and the tales are interesting. Basically, Patchy is an all-out lover of fun and adventure, but his enthusiasm and overconfidence can lead to hiccups! Literally in some cases! Meanwhile, Calico is a bit more reserved and sensible, often trailing along behind Patchy, hoping to keep him out of trouble out of pure friendship. I love the way that the stories begin with the dog wanting to fly and end with him... I won't give it away! The relationship between the animals is cute and reads believably, so it works. I really like the pictures and the one with the dog trying to fly made me chuckle. I think it's good to include drawings in a book for kids. They suit the story because they are cute, fun and quirky. My favourite stories are Can dogs fly?, Wishes come true and Dogs can fly. I think the inclusion of questions at the end of each chapter is a brilliant idea - a way for children to look back over the story and think about it, and remember what happened. There are some lessons to be learnt, told through the two furry characters, and thoughts on friendship. I love the following quote from the first story, which sums up the book for me - "He learned a valuable lesson that day. Be happy with who you are and leave the flying to those who know how to do it." A lovely book for early readers.
